Physalis “Physalis pubescens Aunt Molly”
This variety has small orange fruit with a
taste which certain people say is close to a mandarin.
The variety “Aunt Molly” – called ‘Aent Moll’ by the Dutch of Pennsylvania is
doubtless derived from the variety “Goldie” which was distributed by the seed
merchant Walter Schell of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1920. The botanist
William Darlington described this variety, with orange fruit in 1837 and named
it Physalis Pennsylvania with a question mark. It was, in fact, introduced from
the Caribbean in the 17th century.
Physalis “Physalis pubescens Goldie”
The sweet apricot colored berries are around 2 cm in diameter. The plants are profusely branching and very productive. They bear until frost.
Physalis “Physalis Peruviana”
Often called “goldenberry” in English.
Sometimes (botanically) called “physalis edulis”. This Physalis is considered
by certain people to be one of the best fruits of the solanaceae family. The
height of the plant varies from 50 cm to 1 m. This plant is perennial in
tropical or subtropical regions. Cultivated as an annual in our regions it
takes a long time to grow. The plant can produce 200 g. of fruits. The fruit is
yellow-orange in colour and is covered in a husk. When the fruit is ripe the
husk turns brown and the fruit falls to the ground. They are used in preserves
and jams and are eaten raw or dried.
This species is originally from Peru.
